Isiah Nahwahquaw / Bagwajwenini
Youth Drum and Culture Instructor
My name is Isiah Quinn Nahwahquaw, I am Bear Clan and a proud member of the Menominee Nation. I am thrilled to be a part of the Indian Community School learning family.
As the Drum and Culture Instructor, I plan to share the wisdom passed down by my well-respected mentor. Together, the singers and I will focus on big drum protocols, how to practice the Seven Sacred Gifts. Most importantly, how to have fun while respecting our grandfather, pow wow big drum.
At age 10, I attended Circle of Nations Indian Boarding School in Wahpeton, North Dakota, and my high school years were spent at Chemawa Indian School. I graduated with honors and was inducted into the Hall of Fame for Track and Field and Cross Country. My real journey began as a lead singer at the age of 10. I also had the honor of learning how to craft drum sticks, hand drums and pow wow big drums. My Mentor taught me the importance of giving back to the youth by providing a safe space through singing these traditional songs.
On a more personal note, I am a proud father of 3 beautiful children. My first born son, Isiah Mato Sapa Nahwahquaw Jr, is 11 years young, my daughter, Ivylisse Nahwahquaw is 3, and my youngest, Yazmin Nahwahquaw is just a year old. When it comes to parenting my children, I will be a lifetime learner.
